The 2019 competition is now open!
The 2019 Threatened Species Art and Writing Competition launched on 22 July and entries will close on 23 August.
The Threatened Species Art and Writing Competition is back again this year and we are encouraging all young budding artists up to the age of 12 years to create their most striking artworks or creative writing pieces. The project aims to educate the wider community about the threatened plants and animals that call Macarthur home.
It’s growing
The competition continues to grow. For the third year running, we have included a creative writing component so that young people, who enjoy expressing themselves in written form, can create short stories that celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of the threatened plants and animals that are found in the Macarthur. We are also pleased to announce that the Australian Botanic Gardens and Symbio Wildlife Zoo are back on board, providing some great prizes and additional activities as part of the competition.
How to enter
Whether you're creating an artwork or writing piece, entering is easy!
Simply complete an entry form and drop it in with your artwork or creative writing piece to one of the following venues:
- Camden Council, 70 Central Avenue, Oran Park
- Campelltown City Council Civic Centre, Customer Service Desk, Cnr Queen and Broughton Streets Campbelltown
- Wollondilly Council Administration Building, Customer Service Desk, 62-64 Menangle Street, Picton
Alternatively, post your entry to your respective Council using the following addresses:

Entries close Friday 23 August.
Prizes
There are some great prizes up for grabs for both artworks and creative writing pieces. There are prizes for individual winners and there are prizes for schools. To see the list of prizes and the different prize categories, download the Entry form and Guidelines.
Award ceremony
The competition will once again have an award ceremony to award winning individual and winning schools. The award ceremony will take place prior to Threatened Species Day, on Thursday 5 September, and be hosted by The Australian PlantBank at The Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Annan.
Following the ceremony, award winners will be invited to participate in a Nocturnal Tour of the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland. Be sure to bring a torch and walking shoes!
